How To Deal With Trash Talkers In Sports

Here’s how to deal with trash talkers. In any sport, there’s always a trash talker on the other team, and you probably have one on your own team as well. This is what you need to do:

The first thing to realize is not to get triggered or affected by what they’re saying. That’s why they’re doing it. The whole point of trash talk is to throw you off your game. Here’s how to stay focused when someone’s talking trash:

  1. Recognize that they’re not responding to you personally. Anything they say has nothing to do with you. The whole intent of trash talk is to disrupt your performance, so they’ll make things up and say whatever they can to trigger you.
  2. Understand that once you realize the purpose of trash talk is to provoke you, you won’t get hooked by it. Remind yourself, “Oh, they’re trying to trigger me.” Take a deep breath, relax, and focus on what you’re doing.
  3. Listen to what’s happening around you—whether you’re in the arena, on the court, or on the soccer pitch. Hear your coach and concentrate on your surroundings. Shift your senses elsewhere and don’t put your focus or attention on the trash talk.

The more you practice this, the less it will affect you.
